What started as an answer to unrest in the workforce has now become a much-awaited holiday, marking the end of summer and a time to celebrate the rewards of hard work. That’s right…Labor Day is upon us. So, how exactly did this holiday start? And why do we celebrate it?
Labor Day has its early roots in the Industrial Revolution, a time when most Americans toiled for long hours, often without a day off. This was needed to provide even the most basic living in many areas. Tiring of the monotonous schedule, there was a move toward encouraging appreciation of the working class. In September 1882, a group of workers in New York City took unpaid time off work so they could march together, forming the first Labor Day Parade. In 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed an official Labor Day into law.
Whether you plan to spend your Labor Day at a parade or picnic, the staff at Thelen Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Bay City, MI wishes you a safe and fun Labor Day! We will be closed on Saturday, August 31 and Monday, September 2 so our employees can enjoy the holiday with their families, too.
