A flat tire is something that stays in the back of a person’s mind while driving, with the hope that it will never happen. However, flat tires happen with even the best maintained vehicle. Then what? If you are one of the lucky ones who already knows the tire changing process —perfect! For others, here are some tips on what you can do to fix that flat tire.
In the event of a flat tire, find a safe spot to pull over to assess the situation. Once you have pulled over, turn on your hazard lights for your safety and the safety of others. Check your owner’s manual for any pertinent information,including where your spare tire is located if you are not certain. Inspect the spare tire before placing it on your vehicle. To change the tire, you start by removing the hub cap if equipped. You can easily remove it with the sharp end of the lug wrench. Then, start loosening lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle onto the jack. It will make your job easier when it is time to completely remove them.
Next, locate the cars strongest spot. This is where you will want to place the jack and start to lift the car. When lifting, make sure to move the handle up and down in even motions. Fully loosen and remove the bolts and the flat tire. Place the spare tire. Put the lug nuts on and tighten by hand. Then, lower the vehicle down carefully and remove the jack. Tighten the lug nuts completely (using the lug wrench). When securely tightening the lug nuts be sure to check your vehicle’s manual to ensure the tightening sequence is correct for your specific vehicle. Then all that is left to do is clean up everything that was used during the change and get back to your safe drive.
