3 Tips For Winter Driving

Your wheels are spinning, but going nowhere fast …
and we’re off.
Over the river and through the woods, to Grandmother’s house we go. That is, until we get stuck!
Along with the sparkling winter snow, comes the slick ice. Gone are the friction-laden roads that were so easy to drive on in the summer. With snow already falling in Michigan, getting from point A to point B isn’t always seamless. So, how do you get your vehicle unstuck?
How to get your vehicle unstuck
It’s a frustrating time of year for drivers. But with these tips you can minimize the time it will take you to get unstuck. Plus, if you see another driver who’s stuck, you’ll be able to lend a helping hand!
Gaining momentum and traction
Three ways to get unstuck:
- The Rocking Method
- Store something in your vehicle to slide under your tires
- Keep a tow or recovery strap with you
- The Rocking Method
Time to rock!
It’s called “rocking,” and this is a classic way to get unstuck.
If you drive an automatic, shift into the lowest gear. If you drive a manual, shift into 3rd or 4th. This will reduce the shock to your tires and you’ll gain more control to prevent your tires from spinning. Make sure you turn off traction control.
Use the engine to go forward (even a few inches is progress), put it in reverse, roll backward, shift to drive, and roll forward. Repeat this to build momentum.
Have someone help you push, but stop pushing when the car rocks back. Then push again. Get that rhythm going until you have enough “oomph” to get unstuck.
Spinning your tires doesn’t help. Remember: Less is more when it comes to hitting the gas. Be gentle. Don’t gun it!
Once you make it over the hump, drive until you are on solid ground.
Stop rocking the car if it doesn’t work after 5 minutes, so you don’t damage your transmission.
- Keep something in your truck to slide under your tires (rug, chain, small shovel)
The Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts have got it right: Be prepared!
This couldn’t be truer during the winter months in Michigan. With slippery roads in the near future, sooner or later you’re liable to get stuck.
Keep something on hand that will give you traction, if you should find yourself in this situation. You may use what you have, like one of your car mats. A car mat increases traction under your tire, allowing your car to pull forward.
Items that do the trick:
- Car mats
- Welcome mats
- Old blankets
- Pieces of carpet / carpet squares (save scraps after your next remodel or buy at a discount at the store.)
- Trunk liner
- Salt (this has the added benefit of melting the ice.)
- Kitty litter
- Sand
- Rocks or pebbles (quarter sized and smaller.)
- Small branches and sticks
Put your solid or gritty material of choice around all sides of the tires to gain traction.
Follow these steps:
Step 1: Put your car in park.
Step 2: Take your car mat (or other object) and place it under the stuck tire. The rest of the mat should be in front of the tire, so the tire can run over the mat.
Step 3: Drive forward slowly until you’re on solid (un-slippery) ground.
Step 4: Don’t forget to pick up your floor mat. You’ll need it next time!
- If all else fails, keep a tow strap (or recovery strap) in the backseat or trunk!
Recovery Straps
Recovery straps (snatch straps) are made of stretchy nylon and have loops on both ends. Recovery straps can be a lifesaver when your vehicle gets stuck. Instead of calling an expensive tow truck, you can use another vehicle by utilizing the recovery strap.
To use a recovery strap:
- Make sure your recovery strap is in good shape (not frayed or warn).
- Attach the strap to the back of the vehicle that will be pulling you.
- Attach the other end of the strap to the front of the stuck vehicle.
- Thread the strap through the eye of the other end.
- Make sure the strap is not rubbing against anything sharp.
- Anchor shackles can be used as hardware to secure the strap, if needed.
- When the pulling vehicle moves forward, the strap pulls the stuck vehicle out of the snow!
Tow straps
The main difference between a tow strap and a recovery strap is the fabric’s stretchiness. A tow strap is less stretchy.
Be safe out there!
Whether using a recovery or tow strap, be safe. Straps can break and go flying. Therefore, keep your innocent bystanders away.
Your method of choice
Go with the easiest method for you or what works in your situation. And remember to always drive safely!

When is the best time to buy a vehicle?

It’s all in the timing
When it comes to buying a vehicle, we all want a good deal. We see ads for this sale, but when is it really the best time to purchase a vehicle?
If you can be flexible about when you stop at the dealership, you’ll drastically increase your chances of driving off with a great price!
Here are 3 tips on timing when purchasing a new vehicle:
- The day of the week affects your car’s cost.
- The end of the year has an impact on the price you pay.
- Holidays can mean sales to your advantage.
Day of the week
The Beatles sang, “8 days a week, I love you.” But will car price tags love you every day of the week? Not so much. Turns out, there are certain days that will love you more.
Advice? Shop early in the workweek; avoid weekends.
Mondays are best, followed by Tuesdays and Wednesdays. There aren’t as many people shopping. Salespeople have more time to negotiate.
It’s a numbers game of supply and demand. On Saturdays and Sundays a lot of people are looking to purchase a vehicle. If the salesperson is selling cars left and right at regular price, what incentive do they have to bring the price down for you? With so much to do, the salespeople won’t even have the time to negotiate down.
On the other hand, if you’re the only one at the dealership, you are going to be courted. Salespeople want to end the workday feeling like they accomplished something. It’s human nature!
TrueCar’s 2015 data show that buyers saved an average of 8.1 percent off MSRP (Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price) on Mondays, compared to Saturday (7.77 percent) or Sunday (7.49 percent). According to TrueCar, buyers can save an average of $300 by purchasing a car on Wednesday rather than Sunday.
So, take a personal day off of work to visit the dealer on a weekday. It’s worth it!
Turn just another manic Monday into a great day at Thelen Auto! Make it the day you bring home your new car with a low price tag!
End of the year
Do you struggle to get to places on time? Plan to show up early, only to find yourself arriving late? Well, when it comes to buying a car, this could be an advantage! It pays (literally) to shop at the eleventh hour.
Being “fashionably late” could end up saving you money. Not at cocktail parties on New Year’s Eve, but at the negotiating table with your car dealer.
So … be late!
Shop at the near end of the month and at the end of the year. It’s to your advantage to purchase a car late in the month, and late in the year.
October, November, and December are ideal months to purchase a car. Dealers want to move unsold inventory off their lots, so as to carry as little inventory as possible into the new year.
Car dealerships have sales quotas: monthly, quarterly and yearly. All three of these sales goals come together late at the year’s end. In other words, the end of the year is a triple deadline. Talk about motivation for selling cars!
When dealers have quotas on their minds, you’re in a good position to negotiate!
Note that deadlines don’t always sync up with the calendar month, and often come a few days earlier. Shop for a car on the 26th to 28th day of the month.
The holidays
The holidays are cause for celebration! Not just because it’s time off of work to spend with family and friends; It’s also a key window to get a great deal on buying or leasing a vehicle. Look for three-day weekends and especially days when there will be low traffic at the dealership.
Dealerships often offer holiday sales with rebates and special financing from automakers.
These holidays often offer deep discounts:
- Presidents Day: February offers the smallest discounts, but if you need a car around this time, make it Presidents Day!
- Memorial Day: Summer is typically an expensive time to buy a car, with the exception of Memorial Day. Next year’s models are introduced midyear, so dealers want to sell the cars to make way for new inventory. You’ll see the largest selection of outgoing models on Memorial Day.
- Fourth of July: A mix of incoming and outgoing current-year vehicles means a nice variety.
- Labor Day: This holiday offers selection and competitive prices. Not the deepest discounts, but it’s a tradeoff because you have greater selection.
- Black Friday: Black Friday means lower prices, but be warned that other people have the same idea and it gets busy. Dealerships are competing with Christmas shopping for your business. Black Friday is also the end of the model year, so outgoing models are often discounted.
- Between Christmas and New Year. The holidays put car buying on the backburner for most folks. Simultaneously, dealers are concerned with year-end sales goals. It’s a buyer’s market!
- New Year’s Eve: NYE is one of the best days to shop for a car by far. With monthly, quarterly, and yearly quotas to meet, a bonus could be on the line. Other salespeople want to wrap up deals so they can get to parties (you know, before the clock strikes Midnight!). Car buyers in 2015 saved 8.3 percent on New Year’s Eve, according to TrueCar.
- New Year’s Day: Buyers in 2015 saved 8.5 percent on New Year’s Day. Take advantage of low traffic; it usually makes salespeople more willing to make a deal. Note that manufacturers’ calendars don’t exactly match the yearly calendar. For example, in 2017, the sales month of December ended on January 2, 2018. So you might be able to enjoy your New Year’s Eve Party and New Years and then go shopping. Just don’t drink too much champagne!
In sum: When is the ideal time to purchase a vehicle?
- Mondays
- Tuesdays
- Wednesdays
- Presidents Day
- Memorial Day
- Fourth of July
- Labor Day
- Black Friday
- October
- November
- December
- End of model year
- End of the year
- End of the month
- End of the vehicle’s design cycle
- End of the car’s life cycle
The absolute best days for shopping are December 30 and 31.
In conclusion: Time your purchases for the best deals
They say that timing is everything … If you can play the waiting game and don’t have a particular make and model that is a “must have,” shop at one of these opportune times to save some money for a rainy day!

Get Prepared for Winter Travel

Let it snow?
Winter will soon be here. And that means it’s time to winterize your vehicle before the snow starts falling!
What exactly does winterizing your vehicle entail? Glad you asked! Here is a list of four steps you can take to get your ride winter ready!
4 steps to winterize your vehicle:
- Tire quality check
- Bed cap for trucks
- Winter inspection
- Create your own emergency kit
Winterize your vehicle tip #1: Tire quality check
Winterize your vehicle by checking what makes contact with the snow. We are, of course, talking about your tires. Inspect the tread depth of your tires. In extreme conditions, and “extreme” is often the norm during a Michigan winter, consider snow tires for added safety.
How do you inspect a tire?
Check your tires for wear and damage using the penny test:
- Hold a penny between your thumb and forefinger.
- Find a place on your tire where the tread appears the lowest. Insert Abe Lincoln’s head into one of the grooves (He won’t mind!).
- If any part of Lincoln’s head is covered up by the tread, you’re good to go. If not, get your tires changed.
Winterize your vehicle tip #2: Bed cap for trucks
Do you own a Ram 1500 or another truck?
A truck cap is a removable protective shell that fits over the truck bed. The shell is usually made of fiberglass, steel, or aluminum.
Why go to the trouble of installing a bed cap for your truck? There are a number of benefits, including:
- Fuel efficiency – Reduce the wind drag that results from an open truck bed.
- Organization – Get a customizable cap to help organize your tools and equipment into appropriate compartments.
- Protection – There is less wear and tear on your truck when a protective shell keeps out the dust and debris from the truck bed.
- Security – It’s easy to keep items locked up.
- Style – Customize your truck cap with windows, racks, dividers, your choice of materials, and paint to show off your style.
Winterize your vehicle tip #3: Winter inspection
Winter inspections are important because you avoid unexpected and costly repairs.
It’s always recommended to keep your vehicle properly maintained, but this couldn’t be truer than at the change of the seasons, or before going on a trip. And if you’re traveling over the winter holidays, you’d better listen up!
The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), a nonprofit group, recommends routine maintenance.
The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence tips include:
- Follow the recommended service schedules in your owner’s manual
- Get engine performance and drivability problems corrected
- Replace dirty filters
- Add a bottle of fuel deicer in your tank each month when the temp dips below freezing
- Change oil and oil filter
- Flush and refill cooling system
- Make sure the heater and defroster work
- Replace old blades regularly
- Have your battery checked
- Inspect lights and bulbs
- Have the exhaust system examined for leaks and problems
- Change tires if over worn
- Have your brakes checked
- Check the transmission
- Carry an emergency kit
Winterize your vehicle tip #4: Create your own emergency kit
We like to be optimistic and think it’s all going to be smooth sailing (or driving). The last thing we hope for in winter weather is to have an emergency while we’re on the road. But since statistically it will happen to you sooner or later you should be ready for it before it happens!
The Boy Scouts have it right: “Be prepared.” You never know when you’ll have an emergency. If you’re planning on going out of town, taking precautions is even more important.
Keeping a well-stocked emergency roadside kit in the trunk of your car is one of the best ways you can prepare. What should be included in a road emergency kit?
A roadside emergency kit can include:
- Blanket or space blanket
- Bottled water
- Can of tire inflator and sealant
- Cash
- Cat litter (for icy roads)
- Duct tape (It really does come in handy for everything!)
- Extra pair of wiper blades (How nice would it be to have a set when yours break! Can be purchased at any Thelen parts department.)
- Fire extinguisher (ideally small)
- First-aid kit
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- Flares, triangle reflectors, or LED flares
- Gallon of coolant
- Granola or energy bars
- Ice scraper (If not already in your car!)
- Jumper cables / small, portable lithium-ion batter with jumper cables (Keep it charged, people!)
- Multi-purpose tool
- Non-perishable snacks
- Paper towels
- Pen and paper
- Quart or more of motor oil
- Rags
- Rain poncho
- Scent-free baby wipes
- Spare or full-sized tire
- Spray bottle with washer fluid
- Tarp
- Tire pressure gauge
- Tool kit with screwdrivers, pliers, adjustable wrench, and pocket knife
- Warm change of clothes
Once you have assembled your kit, find something to put it in so it doesn’t roll around, such as a clear plastic container.
Before crossing #4 off of your list, take time to familiarize yourself with how each item functions. The last time and place you’re going to want to learn about your safety items is when you’re in the middle of a crisis needing to use the tools immediately.
You also can buy pre-made emergency roadside kits, but the above D-I-Y kit is more extensive and can be tailored to your vehicle and Michigan’s climate.
If you want to keep things simple, the DMV suggests a basic kit can include:
- First-aid kit
- Flashlight
- Multipurpose tool
- Jumper cables
- Road flares
- Bottled water
It takes time to put together the kit, but it’s well worth it when an emergency arises. A little planning could make your life a lot easier in the future.

What to Look for in a Truck
The trick to finding the perfect truck for you

Wondering what to look for in a truck? Today there are many choices for trucks on the market, so what should you look for when choosing the best truck? There are a number of factors to consider, depending on your needs. Things you should consider are seating, towing capabilities, and extras such as backup cameras and the step that hoists you into the truck itself.
Many truck models can check off these boxes, but those that truly excel at of all of the above are the RAM series of trucks.
Available models of RAM trucks include:
- All-New 2019 RAM 1500
- RAM 1500
- RAM 2500
- RAM 3500
- RAM Chassis Cab
Choosing the best truck should take into account:
- How the back seats function
- Utility tow package
- Hitch backup camera
- Step to get into the bed
How the back seats function
Choosing the best truck means back seats that offer flexibility.
On RAM trucks, you can easily flip up the seats to make room for storage. The back seats can slope at an 8-degree angle, with slide-out adjustments that can adjust the seatback’s angle. Crew-cab seats can also slide back and forward several inches.
Even more room for storage
All RAMs now offer more interior space. Four extra inches have been added, mostly for rear passenger legroom. So, the back seats are comfortable and versatile!
Utility tow package
Make a list of what you’ll tow with the truck. Figure out how much the trailer and cargo weigh. Then you’ll know if you need a heavy-duty truck or if a light-duty truck suits your needs. Since we tend to underestimate things, once you have an estimate of how much weight you need to pull, add 10 percent to the total. That’s the truck you should get.
You’ll need enough power to haul your cargo, but if you purchase a bigger truck, consider how much more it will cost at the pump.
A typical compact pickup truck tows 3,000 to 7,000 pounds. Most full-sized 1500-class trucks tow 5,000 to 10,000 pounds. Some heavy-duty trucks can even tow up to 31,000 pounds!
Types of RAM trucks & max payload, max towing (in pounds):
- 2018 RAM 1500 Big Horn, 6-Liter V6 24-Valve VVT (1,880; 7,670)
- 2018 RAM 1500 Big Horn, 0-Liter V6 EcoDiesel (1,450; 8,090)
- 2018 RAM 1500 Big Horn, 7-Liter V8 HEMI MDS VVT (1,880; 7,670)
- 2018 RAM 1500 Lone Star, 6-Liter V6 24-Valve VVT (1,880; 7,670)
- 2018 RAM 1500 Lone Star, 0-Liter V6 EcoDiesel (1,600; 8,090)
- 2018 RAM 1500 Lone Star,7-Liter V8 HEMI MDS VVT (1,660; 10,520)
- 2018 RAM 1500 Harvest,6-Liter V6 24-Valve VVT (1,880; 7,670)
- 2018 RAM 1500 Harvest,0-Liter V6 EcoDiesel (1,600; 8,090)
- 2018 RAM 1500 Harvest,7-Liter V8 HEMI MDS VVT (1,760; 10,470)
See more truck payload and towing specifications at https://www.ramtrucks.com/towing-guide.html.
Other factors to consider when you know you’ll be towing cargo:
- Engine size
- Drive train
- Frame length
- Cab and bed style
- Installed towing packages
Hitch backup camera
Choosing the best truck should also mean factoring in safety.
The Wireless Hitch Camera helps you to safely haul your trailer, boat, jet ski, etc., from point A to point B.
The hitch camera uses a magnetic base that attaches to the back of your vehicle. The camera uses a 9-volt battery and plugs into your cigarette lighter.
The small camera wirelessly provides an uninterrupted connection for distances up to 70 feet. The 3.5-inch monitor offers a clear view of the ball and surrounding area. The RVS-83112 includes a full-year warranty.
Wireless Hitch Camera highlights:
- Wireless Connection (Guaranteed connection up to 70 ft.)
- Magnetic Camera Mount (Mounts anywhere with no hardware needed!)
- 3.5″ Color Screen LCD Monitor
- Six Infra-Red Lights (30 ft. of night vision)
- Completely Waterproof Camera with an IP68 Rating
Product perks:
- Allows you to easily hitch up your trailer without a spotter
- Installation time only takes 5 minutes!
- System usually outlives the vehicles they are mounted on
Product dimensions:
- Camera: 4″ (H) x 3″ (L) x 1.50″ (D)
- Monitor: 3″ (H) x 3.50″ (L) x 1″ (D)
Plus, there is a 10% discount on the Wireless Hitch Camera for active duty military and veterans.
Step to get into the bed
Choosing the best truck means choosing ease of access!
Bedsteps save you time entering and exiting your vehicle. And they’re easy on your knees and back. Use your hand or foot to flip down a sturdy, non-slip retractable bumper step so you can step into your truck faster, easier, and more safely. This is especially important when you’re moving cargo.
The Bedstep supports up to 300 pounds. The frame mounts under the rear bumper so it works with an open tailgate or when towing. The Bedstep is made in the USA and includes a 3 year/35,000-mile warranty.
Put it to the test
Though currently in testing, you’ll be able to find Consumer Reports results here when the testing of the 2019 RAM series has concluded:

What to Look for in a Small SUV
Think small SUV

They say the best things come in small packages! You’ve decided a small SUV is what best fits your family’s needs. But, what should you look for when choosing the best small SUV?
When choosing the best small SUV, look for cargo space, gas mileage versus horsepower, rear-seat legroom and, of course, safety.
- Functional cargo space
- Gas mileage versus horsepower
- Rear seat legroom
- Safety
If you’re going off road, you’ll want to carry everyone’s clothes, sleeping bags, snacks, and more. A lighter gas bill is always welcomed, especially on longer trips. Speaking of longer trips, legroom is great for making everyone less cranky and asking less frequently, “Are we there yet?” And, safety goes without saying!
The case for small SUVs
Small SUVs come with numerous advantages!
Most small SUVs offer:
- Lower carbon footprint than a regular SUV
- Roomier interior than a sedan
- Light-duty towing
- In-line four-cylinder engines boasting performance and efficiency
- Standard front-wheel drive; all-wheel drive optional
- Automatic transmission
- Power accessories
- Air conditioning
- Audio system
- Rearview camera
- Infotainment system
If you want more interior and cargo space than sedans offer, and better gas mileage than an SUV, choose a compact SUV!
Functional cargo space
When choosing the best small SUV, cargo space is important. Do you go camping a lot? Do you have an aspiring hockey player?
The Jeep Compass has ample space with 27.2 cubic feet of cargo room behind the back seat. Jeep is smart with the space’s versatility and usability. The rear seat and the front-door passenger seat fold almost completely flat, so you can haul long items. Even that Christmas tree as tall as your ceiling!
Additionally, cubbies throughout the cabin offer small-item storage, including a bin in the cargo floor.
Gas mileage versus horsepower
Which one will it be if you had to choose? How about both! Today you don’t have to sacrifice one for the other. You should look for a small SUV that will combine the best of both worlds.
Jeep Compass Gas Mileage: Above-Average Highway Rating
The Jeep Compass has an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 32 mpg on the highway, higher than the rest in its class. Its city rating of 23 mpg is about average.
MPG:
- 22-23 City
- 30-32 Hwy
All 2018 Jeep Compass models come with a 180-horsepower four-cylinder engine and the choice of a six-speed manual transmission or an automatic (six speeds with front-wheel drive; nine speeds with four-wheel drive).
- Manual transmission, six speeds
- Automatic transmission, six speeds with front-wheel drive
- Automatic transmission, nine speeds with four-wheel drive
Rear seat legroom
Choosing the best small SUV for your family means legroom for extended trips. It’s a good rule of thumb to test for legroom in the back with your teens —and don’t forget to leave room to grow. If you have a young child, bring your car seat to the test drive to make sure it fits before you purchase the vehicle!
In terms of rear seat legroom in the Jeep Compass, you’ll find plenty of it.
The Compass interior:
The Compass seats five people with generous legroom for four adults. You can also install a child safety seat in any of the back seat’s three positions.
Safety
We know safety is the #1 concern when choosing the best small SUV for your family – or any vehicle for that matter.
U.S. News & World Report gives the Jeep Compass a 9.3 / 10 when it comes to safety.
Since small SUVs are … well … small(!) … they are able to be equipped with lane keeping assist and full curtain airbags (side airbags that protect the head). Up to 45% of cases of brain injury or death during side impact crashes are reduced when vehicles have curtain airbags, according to Crash Test Vehicle Safety & Accident Prevention.
Crash test smarties
The 2018 Jeep Compass earned a four out of five star overall crash test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
To break it down: The Compass received four stars in the frontal crash and rollover tests, and five stars in the side crash test. The Compass also received the highest score of “Good” in all five tests at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Jeep Compass’ Safety features
A rearview camera comes standard in the 2018 Compass. Jeep also offers a host of advanced safety feature options, including automatic high beams, rain-sensing windshield wipers, blindspot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and rear parking sensors.
- Automatic high beams
- Rain-sensing windshield wipers
- Blindspot monitoring
- Rear cross traffic alert
- Forward collision warning
- Automatic emergency braking
- Lane departure warning
- Lane keep assist
- Rear parking sensors
- Full curtain airbags
Best Compact SUVs includes the 2018 Jeep Compass
Choosing the best small SUV could very well mean selecting the 2018 Jeep Compass! The 2018 Jeep Compass offers off-roading ability, a roomy cabin, and a low price.
Features:
- User-friendly infotainment system
- Good value for an off-road SUV
- Convenient and versatile cargo storage
- Seats five adults comfortably
- FWD or 4WD
- 180 horsepower
- One of the least expensive vehicles in its class (compact SUVs)
- High-quality interior materials
- Great for off-roading on a budget
- 5-inch touch screen
- Bluetooth
- Two USB ports (one for backseat passengers)
- Upgrades available for a 8.4-inch touch-screen display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a navigation system, and a nine-speaker Beats premium audio system
New or used Jeep Compass?
Fully redesigned for the 2017 model year, Jeep didn’t make major changes to the Compass for 2018 or 2019. If you want to save a few dollars, see if there’s a 2018 model available.
2017 updates to the Jeep Compass include:
- Updated interior
- Improved off-road ability
- Modern features such as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
- More horsepower
The Jeep Compass warranty
Jeep offers a three-year/36,000-mile limited warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty for the Jeep Compass.
Which Jeep Compass fits your needs?
The Compass is available in five different trims, including Sport, Latitude, Altitude, Limited, and Trailhawk.
- Jeep Compass Sport
- Jeep Compass Latitude
- Jeep Compass Altitude
- Jeep Compass Limited
- Jeep Compass Trailhawk
You’ve got options!
During the cold winters in Michigan the Cold Weather Group option comes in handy. It features heated seats and remote start. Two different four-wheel-drive systems are also convenient for icy roads; systems feature four traction control settings: Auto, Snow, Sand, and Mud.
Advanced Safety and Lighting Group, and infotainment system upgrades are a couple of the many add-on options! If you want maximum drivability in all weather conditions your SUV should be “Trail Rated”.
Small SUVs are popular for a reason!
People buy more SUVs than cars. SUVs are roomy, offer generous storage, and have towing capabilities. They also feature fuel-efficient engines and drivetrains.
- Roomy cabins
- Generous storage
- Towing capabilities
- Fuel-efficient
In conclusion
The 2018 Jeep Compass includes ample legroom, an excellent infotainment system, versatile cargo storage, and off-roading capabilities for exploring. Get ready for your next adventure!

Four Fuel Economy Tips for Winter Driving
Winter weather driving

We have four tips that will make your driving more fuel efficient. Be kind to the environment and spend your money on Christmas gifts rather than gasoline! Our winter fuel economy tips include:
- Follow tips from the EPA for fuel economy in cold weather
- Check tires to ensure correct pressure
- Clean air filter
- Eliminate extra weight from the vehicle
Cold weather fuel economy (or lack thereof)
The average gas mileage for typical city driving is about 12% lower at 20°F than at 77°F. Gas mileage can even drop as much as 22% on even shorter trips (3 to 4 miles). Hybrids fare even worse, with their fuel economy typically dropping 31% to 34%.
While cold weather and winter driving conditions reduce fuel efficiency, there are things you can do to mitigate this. With the extra money you have to spend on energy in winter to heat your home, it seems unfair that you also have to shell out more on energy to fuel your car. Can’t a Michigander get a break?
The answer is “yes!”
Why you get worse gas mileage in winter
Cold weather affects your vehicle, resulting in poorer fuel economy.
- The engine and transmission friction increases in cold temperatures. Overcoming friction is responsible for over one-third of fuel consumption.
- The engine takes longer to reach its most fuel-efficient temperature.
- Heated seats, defrosters, and heater fans demand energy.
- Warming up your vehicle before you start your trip means you get 0 miles per gallon before you even move!
- Cold air is denser, increasing aerodynamic drag on your vehicle. Not what you want when you’re going 70mph!
- Tire pressure decreases in the cold, which increases rolling resistance. This means more energy is needed to turn your tires the same number of rotations than is needed in warmer conditions.
- Winter gasoline can have slightly less energy per gallon than in summer.
- The cold weather makes it harder for your alternator to keep your battery charged. For hybrids, this affects the performance of the regenerative braking system as well.
- Icy or snow-covered roads decrease your traction, consuming more energy.
- Safe driving speeds on slick roads (when advisably followed) can reduce fuel economy, especially below 30 to 40 mph.
- Four-wheel / all-wheel drive increases fuel consumption.
Follow tips from the EPA for fuel economy in cold weather
The Environmental Protection Agency has winter fuel economy tips to improve your fuel efficiency in cold weather. Don’t be left out in the cold! Read them.
While you aren’t going to get gas mileage like you do in summer, there are many tricks to minimize your fuel usage. Take it from the EPA:
- Park your car in warmer places, like a garage, so it won’t take as long for the engine to reach its optimum running temperature.
- Combine trips. Then you’ll spend a smaller fraction of drive time just to increase the temperature of the engine.
- Minimize idling your car to warm it up. Most manufacturers recommend waiting only 30 seconds. Driving warms up the engine faster, allowing the heat to turn on sooner.
- Don’t use seat warmers or defrosters unnecessary. Wear extra layers instead.
- If you drive a plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle, use seat warmers instead of the cabin heater.
- For plug-in hybrid or electric vehicles, preheating the cabin while plugged into the charger can extend your vehicle’s range.
- Use the oil your vehicle’s manufacturer recommends for cold weather.
- Remove accessories that increase wind resistance, like roof racks (unless, of course, you bike in winter!)
- Regularly check tire pressure.
Check tires to ensure correct pressure
While mentioned in the EPA’s winter fuel economy tips, we’d like to underscore the importance of this advice. So, make sure to check your tire pressure and tread depth!
Check tire pressure with a simple gauge sold at any auto supply store, including Thelen Auto Group. Follow your manual’s recommendations for pressure level and fill up tires with air at a gas station if needed. Most gas stations offer tire air fill-ups for free with a gasoline purchase.
You should check your tires to ensure they have appropriate amounts of tread. Use the “Lincoln Test.” Insert a penny into your tire’s tread headfirst (Lincoln’s head that is!) If you can still see all of Lincoln’s head, replace the tires. Thanks, Old Abe!
Since Michigan is a wintry climate, you might want to install winter tires before the season hits. (If you have questions, let us know!)
Clean air filter
The advice to clean your air filter is sound advice for old cars. However, it isn’t such a concern in modern vehicles with computer chips making calculations and correcting for air flow. So, if your car is old, get your air filter changed for fuel economy. If your car is new, get your air filter changed anyway, but for the reason of increased vehicle performance.
Eliminate extra weight from the vehicle
Think of all the things in your truck bed or cargo in trunk that you’re not currently using (excluding emergency items).
Of all of the winter fuel economy tips this is the most intuitive, yet it’s often forgotten. Any extra weight is weight your car has to use power to carry around. If you don’t need it where you’re going, don’t bring it!
Stay safe!
We at Thelen Auto Group wish everyone a safe – and fuel-efficient! – winter season. Looking for a new ride or in need of winter tires? Stop in and visit us!
